Sony RX100 II FCP Workflow - Transcode AVCHD MTS files to Final Cut Pro

Here is a quick step by step process to get your AVCHD footage from Sony RX100 II to work with FCP smoothly.

The Sony Cyber-shot RX100 II, also known as the Sony Cyber-shot RX100 M2, builds on the original RX100 but makes a number of key changes. The large sensor allows for a range of movie capture modes, including full HD at either 24/25p or 50/60p, in either AVCHD or MP4 formats.

“I have purchased the Sony RX100 II Camera, it records MTS videos, when I import the recordings to Final Cut Pro I always got problems, can you give me some suggestions to help me import Sony RX100 II MTS clips to FCP?”

We found that most of the problems lie within the AVCHD MTS compatibility with Final Cut Pro, the reason that you can’t successfully ingest those recorded AVCHD footages from Sony RX100 II to Final Cut Pro is limited by the FCP itself. AVCHD is a very non-standard format and it’s unsupported in FCP 6/7 even the latest FCP X, so they have to be converted into ProRes MOV. Obviously, we need to get some help from a Sony AVCHD Converter.

The Mac Sony MTS to ProRes Converter is such a powerful MTS/M2TS to Apple ProRes Converter program which works well by allowing you to convert MTS files from Sony RX100 II to Final Cut Pro editable format on Mac.

Simply follow this guide and learn how to accomplish this within a few clicks.

1. Connect your Sony RX100 II to Mac and keep it on. Click the top left two icon to load the whole AVCHD folder, or load the mts videos inside.

Follow AVCHD -> BDMV -> STREAM to locate the mts videos; attached the screenshot:

2. Choose Apple ProRes as output format.

Click “Format” and choose “Final Cut Pro -> Apple ProRes 422(*.mov)” as the best video codec for FCP.

There are other four presets for ProRes: Apple ProRes 422 HQ, Apple ProRes 422 LT, Apple ProRes 422 Proxy and Apple ProRes 4444. Usually the ProRes 422 HQ has better video quality than ProRes 422 and could meet your needs.
